So I am going to be self-publishing my short novella, The Gift Garden in February 2017. There are many reasons why I’m doing this, but I don’t want to go into all that right now (I more than likely will in a future post). I am using the CreateSpace platform to do this, which so far has been a mixed experience. The actual interface of their web portal is pretty horrible, but not as horrible as trying to layout a book in Word. My advice to any prospective self-publishers out there – DO NOT USE WORD. Seriously. Do yourself a favour, get a copy of Adobe InDesign and learn some of the basics. It looks daunting but it really isn’t that bad. Working with images can be more painful though.
I’ll probably write a bit about the whole process once it’s done, or along the way, if there’s anything interesting to say about it. Right now I’m in the process of trying to generate interest, which is a difficult line to walk – how to promote something without becoming what we all hate. I guess I’m like many writers who don’t naturally take to self-promotion or putting themselves out there. But when you’re self-publishing there’s no one else to do it for you.
As part of the whole promo process there is a book trailer:
I made this with my girlfriend, Francesca Lewis. It was a lot of fun, although I think the Psycho imagery doesn’t give an accurate impression of the book. The black liquid is not meant to be blood. If you read the book it will make more sense. Oh well. The music in this is by me. I tried to borrow ideas from the trailers for Nicholas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives, and David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The editing in time with the images I definitely got from Fincher.
There is also a short excerpt up at Fictionaut.
That’s all there is right now, but there are a few more things in the works, so hopefully there will be more to say soon.
